Definition
Patterning is Clay Odom's design method: the use of "operational, combinatory, and organizational logics of transformation embedded within patterning (such as repetition, scaling, rotation, overlapping, separating, joining, cutting, and pasting)" as "graphic, spatial, and programmatic organizing tools." Its formal statement: "As a transformational tool, patterning is a diagrammatic approach that generates possibilities for relating and sequencing form, material, space, and effects. Patterning has the ability to be manifested and explored through a range of techniques from parametric modeling to analogical installation. In this fluidity, it finds strength as a contemporary design method. Due to this fundamental diagrammatic state, it is a process untethered to a particular software or fabrication technique. In fact, this peculiar quality allows it to move with agility across technical modes of production. It is inherently digital… and it may also be enacted through purely analogical means."
Three properties distinguish the method. Diagrammaticity: patterning is "a diagrammatic approach" — its unit is the transformational operation, not the form (see diagrammatic-practice). Software-agnosticism: because it is "untethered to a particular software or fabrication technique," it "move[s] with agility across technical modes of production" — a deliberate contrast with parametricism's platform-specific paradigm (see parametricism). Effects-orientation: the operations "become tested and explored as graphic, spatial, and programmatic organizing tools" whose goal is not the pattern itself but "a broad range of new conditions and effects to emerge" — patterning is how POPs "leverage processes" to "maximize productions." The method descends from Odom's "Patterning Entanglement" (ii Vol. 3, 2014) and was expanded into the UT Austin seminar Patterning: Diagrams, Sequences and Systems; its built instance is the Tesseract series' "systemized, generative collaboration between material, form, light, and sound," where "repetition, scaling, rotation, overlapping, separating, joining, cutting, and pasting" operate on surfaces, light, and sequence together.

Open Questions
- Is patterning a method or a notation? Its operations (repetition, scaling, rotation, cutting, pasting) read as a graphic vocabulary as much as a procedure — does it specify when and why to transform, or only how?
- The method claims agility "across technical modes of production" — but the Tesseract series' actual techniques ("super-light-weight, reflective materials and methods of rigging, folding and draping," in the suckerPUNCH text) are materially specific. Where does the method's generality meet the material's particularity?
- Shape grammars formalized the same operation set for compositional generation; patterning formalizes it for effect-production. Is that a new method or the same mathematics with a different telos (form vs. atmosphere)?
