Definition
Emergence names the production of macro-level patterns by micro-level agents through local rules — the logic by which, in the chapter's design framework, "a series of nodes or agents at the micro-level are extracted from a data source" and, through loop-based calculation, produce "macro-level patterns." Its canonical statement in the wiki's corpus is Wilensky's: "by enabling the rendering, simulation and visualization of the evolution of complex systems over time, the computer has proved an indispensable tool for making sense of complex systems and emergent phenomena" (2001, via Anderson & Lovell-Anderson 2018). In design deployment, "emergent computational form-generation approaches to design applied in conjunction with digital and physical making encourage the examination of the complexities that compose natural forms and their corresponding internal geometries."
The concept has two connected faces in the source. Agent-based emergence: agent-based visual scripting serves "as a medium for experimentation, decision-making, and problem solving to formulate dynamic surfaces and topographies" — the designer writes rules, agents execute them, pattern results. Self-organizing assembly: the chapter's exemplar is natural — the chitin gyroid of Callophrys rubi wing scales, "organized in gyroid forms to produce structural coloration," achieved by the cell's own deposition and degeneration — and artificial: the base geometry "aggregated through tiling in the mathematical logic of self-organization… a topography and spatial geometry where the physical systems are visually self-organizing into a distinctive three-dimensional pattern." The aggregate — "large amounts of unbound elements lying in loose frictional contact, therefore subdividing a system into smaller parts that can be independently created and used in different systems" (Hensel, Menges & Weinstock, via note 11) — is the emergent system's built form.
The concept belongs to the wiki's digital cluster (computational-design) but is distinct from parametricism's continuous fields: emergence is rule-plus-population (discrete agents, aggregate patterns), not parameter-plus-continuity — the part-to-whole kinship runs to discrete and kit-of-parts as much as to Schumacher.

Open Questions
- Is emergence in design explanatory or decorative? The chapter borrows the butterfly's result (50/50 porosity) but not its process (cellular deposition and degeneration). At what point does borrowing nature's pattern stop being emergence and become biomorphic quotation?
- The aggregate is "unbound elements… in loose frictional contact" (Hensel/Menges/Weinstock), but the Gyroid's modules tile a mathematical surface with vertex-level precision. Is the emergent aggregate compatible with the deterministic surface, or does the chapter quietly fuse two different paradigms — stochastic aggregation and parametric tiling?
- Meadows's systems produce "an expression of an observed regularity"; emergence claims novelty without specification of which observer observes it. In a design studio, who decides when a pattern has "emerged" — the agents, the algorithm, the student, or the grading rubric?
- Does emergence connect the wiki's digital cluster to its everyday cluster? Emergent phenomena are ordinary, unauthored, collective — is the studio's tiling logic a computational version of the vernacular's "communal art" (everyday-architecture, authorship)?
