Mechanization
Definition
Mechanization names the long process — from the late Middle Ages through the Industrial Revolution — by which machine power and abstract systems progressively replaced the material, the corporeal, and the local. The concept enters the wiki through Frank Jacobus's chapter, which builds its dematerialization thesis on Lewis Mumford's Technics and Civilization (1934) and Sigfried Giedion's Mechanization Takes Command (1948). Mumford "cites the clock, then the printing press, as supplying a prototype for the future developments of industrial society." The clock's invention is the concept's founding paradox: "With the clock arose the invisible umbrella of time, organized and structured on a mass scale, 'giving human enterprise the regular collective beat and rhythm of the machine.' That time, this mostly invisible and abstract instrument, can so affect, control, and order the lives of so many collectively is testament to the notion that the effects of the immaterial are being strengthened in relation to the material during and leading up to the industrial age."
Jacobus's gloss is the concept's definition: "Timekeeping, or the notion that we can divide, organize, and commodify that which does not have a physical existence and is merely a construct developed by sheer human will, is perhaps another of the first signs that the material is beginning to relinquish control during the late Middle Ages and into the Industrial Revolution." Mumford's formulation of the consequence: "Abstract time became the new medium of existence. Organic functions themselves were regulated by it: one ate, not upon feeling hungry, but when prompted by the clock: one slept, not when one was tired, but when the clock sanctioned it."
The Interior Register of Mechanization
The chapter's distinctive contribution is the interior's mechanization history, via Giedion:
- Medieval spatial comfort was "in large part determined by the unity of the proportions, materials, and form of the room's shell" — furniture being "large, cumbersome, and expensive," small objects were "not a dominating factor in the perception of the room's spatial presence."
- Nineteenth-century space — "after having evolved for several hundred years during the age of mechanization, became defined much less by the plan and sectional volume and more by the objects within." The Industrial Revolution's fast production "made smaller pieces of furniture (lamps, art objects, etc.) so attainable that there seemed to be a rush to fill spaces with them. Habitation areas no longer needed to be strongly defined spatial realms in order to elicit comfort. Space had become neutral, a backdrop for the smaller designed objects that began to dominate our lives." See comfort.
- The law of palliation: "It seems standard that with the advance of technology and the replacement of hand power by machine power, a palliation of intricate interior spatial form occurs. By the middle of the nineteenth century, human perceptual comforts were no longer dictated by space that is bound in the physical. Through this evolution, we became accustomed to modes of creation that divorce the need for personal physical power and handcraft for object and even spatial production."
And the abstract-space dividend: "Just as the world after the rise of the book was 'lightened,' in that information once conveyed through the weight of stone was now transportable by hand, the clock gave rise to new conceptions of abstract space, interchangeable and relatable over any distance, transportable in the minds of humans."
The Abstraction Gradient
Mechanization's cultural signature is the replacement of the concrete by the abstract: "In the period from 1850 to 1890, the entirety of Western culture was trying to discover their relationship with new forms of mechanization. As society mechanizes, one by one, concrete entities are replaced by their abstract counterparts. Mumford points to the romanticism of numbers as resulting in the rise of capitalism, and the change from a barter economy, facilitated by small supplies of variable local coinage, to a money economy with an international credit structure and a constant reference to the abstract symbols of wealth: gold, drafts, bills of exchange, and eventually merely numbers" (see abstraction, capitalism). The chapter's terminus: "The Industrial Revolution, with the clock and the printing press as its progenitor and exemplar, in substituting manpower for machine power, had driven material sensibilities to the brink of the immaterial."

Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (Hope 1807/2006) — the concept's earliest interior-register document, a century before Giedion's account: furniture "wrought by the most mechanical processes only, either remained absolutely void of all ornament whatever, or, if made to exhibit any attempt at embellishment, offered in its decoration no approach towards that breadth and repose of surface" (pp. 153–154) — and the trade's product "insolidity and flimsiness of their texture" (p. 154) as mechanical production's material signature. Hope's 1807 complaint — that machine-wrought furniture is flimsy, ornament-void and without "due solidity of form" — is the earliest statement of the law of palliation's domestic twin: where Jacobus/Giedion date the interior's mechanization effects to the mid-nineteenth century ("Habitation areas no longer needed to be strongly defined spatial realms"), Hope's furniture-scale critique shows the mechanism's effects on objects already diagnosed at its beginning, with "solidity of form" as the handcraft quality the machine's product lacked. Architectural purgatory (Morey & Alkanoglu 2018) — the machine/technology split as mechanization's late verdict: "Society has found itself welcoming technology within the setting of the home, while uneasy of the term machine, which has come to imply dirt, noise, and pollution" — "The car is no longer a machine, but technology," "a thriving sustainable appliance allowed in the home." Streamlining: The Aesthetics of Waste (Lupton & Miller 1992/2006) — mechanization's domestic arrival, room by room: the bathroom as "an overtly industrial ensemble of porcelain-enameled equipment, with white, washable surfaces that reflected contemporary theories of hygiene" (p. 205); the kitchen's fixture-form — "the slender legs supporting individual units were absorbed into monolithic, built-in slabs which linked mechanical devices to work and storage cabinets" — and its factory plan: "The modern kitchen emulated the unforgiving sparkle of the bathroom: it also reflected the production ideal of the modern factory, whose linear sequence of work stations enabled an unbroken flow of activity. This norm, which we call the continuous kitchen, was established by the end of the 1930s and still remains powerful today" (p. 206); the room-scale terminus — "The bathroom became a compact organism lodged at the core of the home, while the kitchen became a miniaturized, open plan factory" (p. 209). Where Giedion (via Jacobus) dates the interior's mechanization to the object-fill of the nineteenth century, Lupton & Miller show its plan-form: the factory's linear flow built into the house's working rooms as fixtures — mechanization not as ornament-palliation but as spatial programme (see kitchen, bathroom, process-of-elimination).

Hearts and minds and dishwashers (Larson 2018) — mechanization's Cold War career: the domestic machine conscripted as geopolitical evidence. The American National Exhibition's RCA/Whirlpool kitchen was "populated by labor-saving technology and push-button ease, including a floor-cleaning robot and little need for the cook to even rise from a chair"; the "gadgets" Nixon showcased were argued "in liberating the housewife from home-slavery," while Khrushchev answered "we have such things" and brought the exchange "back to a dishwasher-to-dishwasher comparison" — mechanization's domestic artifacts as the measure of competing systems, with Nixon's "almost hilarious comparison of color TV to rocketry" proving "that consumer goods and the home interiorities in which they were couched were viewed as equally important to the cold-warring nations." The register also supplies mechanization's civil-defense face: survival credited to "a modern (and neatly kept) home with modernized infrastructure" (The House in the Middle) — infrastructure modernization as patriotism. The Kitchen as a Place to Be (Potter 1990/2006) — the resistance register, the concept's kitchen career answered from the workshop side. Potter's "highly generalised and frictionless modern kitchen in which time and labour saving comes first" (p. 266) names exactly the continuous-kitchen norm Lupton & Miller historicize — and refuses it in built form ("next-to-no gadgetry," the Penton kitchen designed "in the round, i.e. as seen and used in movement"). The designer's counter-labour within the mechanized field: integration of industrially produced equipment is "the rub," met by "diligent catalogue searching… in out-of-the-way trade sources, discontinued lines," by "de-styling or practically modified" products, by "visual isolation as the only acceptable price of their inclusion at all," and by the standing practice of "dismantling junky pseudo-high-tech plastic assemblies, stripping the surplus dials and insignia off them, and replacing, or relocating, their indifferently designed finger controls" (p. 265). And the exemplar inverted: the four-ounce Meta-fuel stove, "a model of clarity and intelligence, and no product designer has yet reached near enough to design the life out of it (nor would it pay him, at this cheaper end of the trade)" (p. 264) — the object at mechanization's cheapest end as the one the design profession has not yet mechanized into junk. Where the page's other sources trace mechanization's advance, Potter supplies its domestic refusal and its residual hope — the trade's cheaper end where the life survives (see kitchen, taylorism).
Open Questions
- Giedion's diagnosis — that the register evolution "confused the human environment" by splitting "our modes of thinking from our modes of feeling" — is quoted at the chapter's opening but never resolved. Does the interior's mechanization history (shell → objects) support the split thesis, and what would a re-unified interior look like?
- Is the clock's abstract time the interior's first dematerialization? The chapter treats time ("Time took on the character of an enclosed space") as the model for abstract space — does that make mechanization the origin of space as abstraction rather than place?
- Mumford's money economy (barter → "abstract symbols of wealth… and eventually merely numbers") runs exactly parallel to the register succession (stone → paper → bits). Is dematerialization then an economic phenomenon before it is an architectural one — and does the wiki's finance-architecture cluster (financialisation-of-architecture) supply the contemporary form?
- The chapter's law of palliation ("with the advance of technology… a palliation of intricate interior spatial form occurs") is stated as standard but not argued. Is it a real historical law — and does digital fabrication (Manack's "increased modes of spatial articulation") reverse or confirm it?
