Definition

The prefab interior names the prefabrication of interior elements and assemblages — interior components manufactured off-site as complete units, ranging from singular elements to whole interior systems — and the historiographic claim that this practice is prefab's suppressed core. Deborah Schneiderman's founding diagnosis is an omission: modern prefabrication's literature of over a century "has contained a notable omission," while "the techniques and applications of prefabrication of the interior have been evident for thousands of years," and "prefabrication in the built environment owes much of its advancement to concepts investigated in terms of interior architectural elements and components." The evolution of the prefab house "decidedly includes the development of ideas and integration of prefabricated interior components." The concept's spectrum runs from the singular element (the Sears kit houses' "interior lining that was essentially an early form of gypsum"; Wright's prefabricated frieze) through the complete assemblage (Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion Bathroom, 1936 — the "forerunner that influentially fueled the subsequent specialty prefabrication market" and "a precursor to the pod bathrooms currently being designed and installed in buildings today") to the fully integrated house, where Schneiderman identifies three typologies "where the interior environment is truly integrated in the conceptualization of the prefabricated house": the Lustron House (built-ins as "programmed prefabricated space" in the same porcelain-enameled steel as the exterior), Shigeru Ban's Furniture House ("furniture and house are one"), and su11's Composite House (interchangeable add-ons). The open system (Sears's optional kit elements, su11's interchangeable add-ons): components that interchange, plug in, and reconfigure — "the fabrication of modular, transportable, or interchangeable elements allows for adaptability and reuse, increasing the life of all the elements." The concept's evaluative climax is a hierarchy claim: in the advanced cases "the traditional design hierarchies have been eliminated, and the resultant form exists as an equalization of all elements" — interior, furniture, structure, and exterior as composite equals, with interior elements "elevated for programmatic necessity rather than decoration."

Manack's interior fabricates its distinction from architecture; Schneiderman's integrates interior, furniture, structure, and exterior into "an equalization of all elements." Can one discipline carry both production programs at once?
  • The Lustron case argues that closed-system integration kills prefab economics: is interoperability (the open kit) the hidden law of prefabrication — and does su11's shell-minimized system finally satisfy it?
  • When homeowners inhabit enameled steel "utilizing magnets throughout the interior," user adaptation compensates for the manufactured interior's fixedness.
