Digital Architecture
Definition
Digital architecture refers to architectural design and production enabled by computational tools (CAD, 3D modeling, algorithmic design). The term encompasses both the use of digital tools to realize pre-existing aesthetic visions (as in Hadid's case) and the claim that digital tools generate new aesthetic paradigms (as in parametricism). Key software includes Maya (originally for animation), Digital Project (adapted from aircraft industry by Gehry's office c. 2000), and various parametric modeling platforms.
Qureshi adds a disciplinary-application register: the "post-analog" shift — "a deprioritization of the physical… representing an existential crisis for architecture" — meets digital production through Blaine Brownell's "disruptive application" (building on Marshall McLuhan), "where conventional solutions are unexpectedly replaced by new ones leading to innovative and advantageous developments." Interior architecture's digitally produced fabrication and "advanced material specificity" make it "ripe for the disruptive application of digital technologies," with augmented reality as the emerging hybrid of digital installation and existing space.
Manack adds the production-side disciplinary register, defined as digital-fabrication: "Digital fabrication processes translate information from a digital model or drawing to a computer-controlled fabrication machine, transforming immaterial design content into a material product" — with mass customization making "bespoke elements viable in the construction industry," and the paradoxical strength of "increased modes of spatial articulation within a delimited palette" reinforcing "contemporary interior architecture's ability to assert its unique identity."
Carraher adds the spatial-agency register: what distinguishes digital architecture from modernism is not the tools but the spatial politics they enable. Modernist universalism gave way to a CNC-enabled ideal — "today's computer numerically controlled (CNC) technologies encourage the ideal of mass customization to adapt designs for particular sites, particular programs, and particular clients" — swapping "modernist universalism for cultural relativism" and valuing "active space, which does not hide itself but proudly displays its dynamism. It draws attention to its conditions of production and impresses its spatial agency on our consciousness" (see spatial-agency, heterogeneous-space). The register's critical edge: four decades of digital work "remain in the realm of figurative objects, articulated surfaces, or full-scale prototypes… without engaging with the social and spatial dimensions of how such forms differentiate space" — and its exemplar of what overcoming that would take is WikiHouse's open-source model (see self-build).

Design studio through the subtle revelations of phenomenology (Smith 2018) — the pedagogical counter-register: digital architecture's studio costs. The critique is of how the tools reshape the designer: "the headlong rush into formalizing and rationalizing human experiences through the strict linearity of computer programs and their seductive operational values"; "an addictive fascination with what happens on a screen to the neglect and detriment of hand drawing, model making, and other physical forms of material experimentation (exploration, the happy accident, and wonderment of the diverse influences)"; "There is less connection with the real and immediate as the digital and virtual take the central focal point of many students today." Notes on Digital Nesting (Goulthorpe 2002/2006) — the movement's founding self-description and its poetic audit, from inside the digital vanguard itself: John Frazer's An Evolutionary Architecture (1995) as "perhaps the preordinate expression of an emergent 'digital' discourse, and a pioneering attempt at the definition of a new architectural language as well as new patterns of creativity" (pp. 133–134); the movement's projects (Lynn, Nox, Novac) judged "in their capacity as 'images' rather than in their 'prudence' as actualisable architectural works, such images then seemingly legitimised by the Poetics" (p. 133); the open question of whether digital production — "steeped in discourses of scientific rationalism… yet which proffers entirely new genres of creative possibility" — can offer "sufficient scope for a genuine cultural morphogenesis" (p. 133). Where Olsen dates the digital turn's diffusion and Carraher its spatial politics, Goulthorpe supplies its self-theorization: the digital as a claim about the very manner of creative imagining (see evolutionary-architecture, poetic-image).

Productions: spatial practices, processes, and effects (Odom 2018) — the production register: digital architecture as the escape-velocity condition for design's "movement from objects to space" — "The escape velocity needed to generate this trajectory… was reached due to the expansion of digital tools and techniques, access to low-cost hardware, and – most importantly – the proliferation of installations as a typology of work where advanced spatial practices can be tested, evaluated, deployed, sampled, and redeployed." The chapter also dates the movement: Greg Lynn's Intricacy (2003) mounted "at the beginning of what Mario Carpo has recently described as the 'second digital turn', and probably the antecedent for POPs." Its distinctive claim is the software-agnostic thesis: patterning is "a process untethered to a particular software or fabrication technique… It is inherently digital… and it may also be enacted through purely analogical means" — digital logic without digital obligation, and the installation (see installation) as the typology digital tools made enumerable. Topology and interiority: Folding space inside (Voordouw 2018) — the media-historical and spatial-critique register: topology as the digital revolution's architectural result ("Topology in architecture is an inherent result of the 'digital revolution' that has taken shape since the mid-1980s"); Carpo's The Alphabet and the Algorithm quoted five times — "a revolution with no identifiable history and no predetermined destination" (p. 110), topology as "the embodiment of the new computer age," and the truism-fallacy ("built on a truism but generalized into a fallacy": the computer facilitates complex form but "does not presuppose curvilinear forms," p. 85); and the digital condition's spatial cost — "Through computation, there is an increased gap between form (which is logically, parametrically, defined) and space, which is now a secondary result of form." Altered (e)states (Erdman 2018) — the postdigital counter-register: digital architecture diagnosed from inside practice as continuity-biased. "The contemporary field of architectural software favors this continuous, smooth, singular, and fully integrated approach" (adaptation); the disjunctive theories of the 1980s are "absent from digital architecture today due to an obsession with continuity and an intellectually stubborn insistence on designing the whole"; the digital type-case is the "single-surface Yokohama Port Terminal (FOA 2002)." The register's alternative is the postdigital position: "looking back at this work after twenty years of smooth and continuous digital projects is to embrace the agility of the fragment and the disjunctive while trying at the same time to explore how those interventions do not remain entirely separate follies but instead form new types of more complex architectural wholes" — with the digital techniques retained ("a composite of technological approaches… ranging from digitally prefabricated construction to algorithmically generated graphic design and coloring techniques") but redirected to alteration's fine-grained, episodic, interiorized interventions. Where Carraher's digital practice displays agency and G&J's senses, Erdman's curtails the whole — the digital as tool of the centripetal rather than the centrifugal.
