Definition
Mass customization is the serial production of non-identical elements at (or below) mass-production cost — the economic hinge on which digital fabrication's disciplinary promise turns. Manack's definition: "The efficiency with which customizable, non-identical elements are designed and serially mass produced has made the deployment of bespoke elements viable in the construction industry by mitigating the premium cost for custom components and assemblies." The concept unsettles architecture's industrial-era basis in identical reproduction — Mario Carpo's "identicality" thesis (cited via Manack's note 7) ties authorship itself to the identical copy — because when every element can be unique without a cost penalty, the authorship economy built on repetition loses its ground.
Satterfield and Swackhamer supply the concept's clearest economic analysis, starting from the identicality pole: vacuum-formed polystyrene "is an excellent material if the goal is to produce multiple copies of an identical shape. This is because the initial mold presents a relatively high upfront cost, but the cost per unit decreases as more copies are produced. However, if units with any variation are desired, it is a very expensive material and process. Any modification to unit shape, even if minor, requires the fabrication of an entirely new mold." Their variable vacuum-forming mold (VarVac Wall) inverts the economics: by making the mold itself dynamically modifiable (cables of "variable" quantity, position, and density across a frame), graded variation becomes a parameter of one cheap mold rather than the cost of many — "the further apart the cables on a given mold, the more porous the panel; the closer together the cables, the less porous the panel." SHoP's Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse shows the assembly-side twin: "thousands of digitally designed and fabricated components" whose idiosyncrasy is made buildable by unskilled labor through numbering and keying — "idiosyncratic pieces that were numbered and keyed for easy site assembly."
Anderson and Lovell-Anderson supply the concept's parametric-input register (2018): variation as data rather than as geometry. In their autogenic workflow (autogenic-design), "variable inputs allow for the calculated manipulation of the surface parameter, environment size, and variations in the number of nodes or agents" — the serially varied unit is the tiled module of The Gyroid (the-gyroid), whose fill density and porosity are set by a borrowed natural parameter ("a condition of 50% structural volume and 50% air or porosity. This parameter becomes the primary input that will be applied to the submodules"). Where VarVac varies the mold and SHoP varies the component, this register varies the input value — mass customization reduced to the calibration of parameters, with the component's form following "from the notion of 'self-generated' modular forms as a result of a subdividing process" (Yeung).

"The possibility to collect and manage large amounts of data allow for integration of information, through computational processing, within the fabric of the architectural envelope. Information-rich, heterogeneous environments are the result of a process of management and cross-fertilization of data within a single integrated design process. As a result, the continuous variations of building components allow for the actualization of a truly responsive, differentiated spatial condition." The built demonstration is the author's own Laminae: "a differentiated and performative envelope attempting to overcome the existing dichotomy between standardization and the need for diversity and change in environmental structures. The design uses parametric design protocols to develop a semi-modular construction formed by the aggregation of differentiated triangular units" — variation not as an end (customization for its own sake) but as the means by which the envelope produces a differentiated interior (performative-envelope, heterogeneous-space). Where Manack, Satterfield & Swackhamer, Carraher, and Emerging Objects answer whether non-identical seriality is viable, Vanucci answers what it is for: continuous component variation is how space stops being homogeneous.

Open Questions
- Does mass customization return craft's variance to architecture, or industrialize variance itself (Manack's page question, sharpened by VarVac)? When the mold, not the designer, grades the porosity, whose variation is it?
- Is VarVac Wall still "customization" when the designers "do not willfully design the project" and its "final appearance is contingent upon programmatic circumstance and material parameters"? If customization means the customer's or designer's choice of variant, VarVac is arguably mass variability without a customizer.
- Carpo's identicality thesis predicts a discipline shaken by non-identical seriality — does the wiki's authorship cluster (authorship) register that shake, or does repositioned authorship (system- and tool-authoring) simply relocate the identicality problem one level up (the identical mold, the unique wall)?
- Does the "delimited palette" (Manack) and the single-material logic of VarVac (polystyrene) mean mass customization is structurally tied to a few digital materials — and what happens to bespoke building at material scale?
- Carraher claims the nonstandard-cost premium is a contingent legacy, not a natural law — but is "an audience beyond the technocratic elite" actually served by mass customization, or does WikiHouse's volunteer-labour model shift the premium from the component to the household's own time, tools, and land?
