Technological Limits

Definition

Technological limits name the boundary conditions — of project, discipline, machine, structure, and production protocol — treated not as obstacles to design but as its operative material. Clare Olsen's chapter states the thesis at the outset: "In interior architecture, project goals define a scope of work that is further informed by the boundary conditions of site, contextual surroundings, code requirements, and budgetary restrictions. These bounding (and sometimes binding) conditions of each project create explicit limits to production. It is through artful understanding of these limits that design becomes stronger and more real." The concept has a double direction: limits are interrogated (innovation "arise[s] through experimentation and sometimes risk"; innovation appears "often on the periphery or outside the limits of its own body," via Speaks) and limits are asserted (against parametric overproduction — "is more really more?" — the curated object and Dewey's "pauses, places of rest"). The chapter's formula: "By questioning disciplinary, manufacturing, or structural limits while acknowledging the ramifications of overproduction, designers can find rich inspiration for the emerging practice of interior architecture."

The concept's disciplinary grounding is Mark Linder's "Transdisciplinarity": disciplinary identity without "posturing and siloing," with working at the "border" of the discipline producing "new knowledge and an expansion of disciplinary expertise" — and the crucial inversion that "it is at the limits 'where we become most aware and in need of the tools, techniques, and technologies of the discipline.'" Limits are where the discipline becomes visible to itself and where its tools are forged: "Advances arise by harnessing disciplinary expertise associated with the technologies of production to push against disciplinary boundaries."

Three registers of limit-interrogation structure the built evidence:

  • Machine limits. "Machines are generally understood as finite tools – they do what they do – but within the context of design where norms are questioned, machines can be a productive subject for experimentation." CNC machines "co-opted from manufacturing industries" carry an interior-scale dividend — "CNC machine size limitations lend well to the interior scale" (mills ~4×8 ft, laser cutters under 4 ft, 3D printers under a cubic foot buildable) — while 3D printing's geometric freedom collides with its cost barrier (standard materials "upwards of US$75 per pound," "the more durable, the more costly"). Emerging Objects' hack — printing salt, sand, and sawdust — demonstrates "that questioning the limits of machines can enable new potentialities for interior design and spatial experiences" (see 3d-printing).
  • Structural limits. The building industry's "natural aversion to profound risk" (codes, analyses, mock-ups, testing) is answered by the installation: "installation projects can provide low-risk opportunities to expand the limits of structural performance." Iwamoto Scott's Voussoir Cloud (digital form-finding via hanging chain model → pure-compression vaults, "continuous, yet differentiated, stable, and also incredibly light"), Wiscombe's Cantilever (ANSYS-tested composites, fibers "tattooed" as structure and ornament), and Roberge's En Pointe ("the thinnest it can possibly be, which is stable without appearing static"; the "column cluster" typology) are the register's built proofs.   • Production limits. The critical counter-register: parametric modeling's "endless number of results" ("computers are excellent tools for optimization and efficiency, and they are also superb at generating excess") and Massie's autonomy/accountability trade ("With the removal of traditionally mitigating forces in the logistics of architectural production, the onus of accountability received by the architect becomes greater"). Here limits are imposed — by the hand-sized modules of Bioform, the framed ornament of Klex 1, and Dewey's "pauses, places of rest," which make "more notable sensorial experiences" by "celebrating the boundaries and blankness between things."

  • The chapter's exemplars are all institutional installations and exhibition objects — do limit-interrogations translate to the "budgetary restrictions" of ordinary interiors, or does the concept presuppose an economy of low-risk galleries?
  • Is the double direction stable? The chapter both expands limits (thinner, lighter, more intricate) and asserts them (finite objects, blank walls) — is there a criterion for when a limit should move and when it should hold, beyond taste ("the technological innovations discussed here do not appeal to all audiences")?
  • If "it is at the limits where we become most aware and in need of the tools… of the discipline" (Linder), does the discipline's tool-set grow only by transgression — or does the production-limit register show limits themselves generating tools (the variable mold, the hacked printer)?
