Static vs. Dynamic Architecture
Framing
Is architecture essentially a static, durable, monument-making art — or an environment that changes with its occupants in real time? The debate concerns architecture's temporal ontology: whether the value of building lies in stability, permanence, and the representation of self "beyond the present," or in responsiveness, feedback, and an "immanent relationship to lived space." It matters for the interior disciplines especially, because the interior is where inhabitants and buildings actually meet in time — and because the emerging technologies of sensing and actuation promise (or threaten) to make the interior a "flow of information" rather than a fixed enclosure.
The debate's contemporary articulation is Mark Taylor's "Shape shifting" (2018), which reports Ole Bouman's thesis that ubiquitous computing and "asynchronous structures" challenge "the classical worldview of architecture as a static, built placemaking device": in an age where "human behavior is no longer framed by place," architecture "will lose its position and character as a consistent and integrated form of cultural communication." Taylor's own formulation of the stake: "In a social sense, this recurrent process of time measured from the past through to the present anticipates a predictable future informed by stability. The data-driven environment, however, is inherently unpredictable, as its 'stability' is ever changing."
Positions
Position A: Architecture as Static Monument — permanence as transcendence
The classical position, reconstructed by the debate's challengers: architecture is the built form of the desire "to represent oneself beyond the present" — its "recurrent process of time measured from the past through to the present anticipat[ing] a predictable future informed by stability." At its monumental limit, "monumental architecture has become the signifier of the ability to transcend death, because it seems to be eternal and claims durability and imperishability." This is the architecture-as-cultural-communication whose loss Bouman's liquid architecture announces. In the wiki's wider clusters, this position's theoretical relatives are Arendt's durable world of work (the monument against mortality — see world-alienation) and the durability pole of the dwelling-vs-housing debate.

Modernist-spatial antecedent (homogeneous space): the static pole has a spatial-order form deeper than the monument — modernism's homogeneous "universal space." Carraher (2018) reconstructs it: twentieth-century modernity "idealized a type of homogenous space that was a universal space – one of the key paradigms for establishing the desired democratic space," whose "desire for egalitarianism turned to standardization, and standardization made architecture disappear by attempting to hide its effects and power" — built environments that "feigned neutrality, but in fact imposed a heavy-handed formal structure that overwrote the local context." On this reading the static pole's modern form is not the eternal monument but the neutral box: stability produced not by permanence but by the concealment of spatial agency ("the built environment has always had agency, though it has not always been designed to reveal this"). And the pole's quiet strength: "Modernist space may have allowed greater agency for inhabitants because of its neutrality" — the unprogrammed box leaves room to act. See homogeneous-space.
Representational antecedent (dynamism the drawing cannot hold): the static pole has a documentation form as well as a spatial one. Lois Weinthal's chapter (2018) shows that the discipline's shared drawing convention is built for stasis: orthographic projection "provides true data under the assumption that only physical elements are documented," its still-life requirement demands that "the form being recorded hold still," and its hinge "is conducive to the static nature of architecture. In contrast, interiors align with time-based activities but are typically absent in orthographic drawings" — occupants moving while the room is drawn leave no trace, and "orthographic drawings like it that way; it keeps the space clean and objective rather than muddy with the ephemeral shoes of people walking through it." The antecedent relocates the debate's axis from the building to its representation: the static pole is reproduced in the very instruments that document the dynamic one, so that a discipline can design for the temporal while drawing only the static — the dynamic pole's documentation existing, so far, outside the professional document set (the pirouette's one-inch fracture, Pavlova's stage-light, the space-shapes, the light tracings: "the precursors to current motion capture technology"). Weinthal's programme — movement "distilled down to a set of rules… derived from the documentation of movement first" — is the debate's temporal question restated graphically: not whether buildings are static or dynamic, but whether the drawing system that defines the disciplines can represent the difference at all. Media antecedent (the static artifact's virtual depth): the static pole's newest form is the media surface: the static physical artifact delivering dynamic (virtual) space without moving. Frank Jacobus's chapter (2018) reports the expectation: "Interactive surfaces are a direct and literal example of this phenomenon, wherein the wall as a static, physical artifact begins to deliver a deeper and more complex space than that of the physical interior itself. We've begun to expect more from the physical surfaces that surround us" — with the value-inversion stated for energy-harvesting floors ("Floors can no longer simply be a place to live or stand; what they deliver physically is now a given; their new value will arise from what they deliver virtually and intellectually") and for stone's thinning ("an incredibly thin veneer supported by an often invisible building frame… an evolving form of dematerialization"). The antecedent deepens Glanville's deflation from the material side: the static wall need not move, sense, or respond to acquire "dynamic" value — value migrates from what the artifact is (matter, mass, enclosure) to what it delivers (energy captured, graphics read, symbols grounded "purely intellectually and culturally rooted"). Where Weinthal's antecedent showed the static pole administered in documentation, Jacobus's shows it administered in expectation: the static surface stays static while its dynamic depth goes virtual — dynamism as deliverable content rather than behavior. Historiographic antecedent (frozen time and the plurality of befores and afters): the static pole's authority-regime form, named by Anne Massey's chapter (2018) via Jeremy Till: the interior's image is itself a static-pole technology. The architectural convention presents the interior as "a freshly constructed, shiny new entity, usually without inhabitants in a fixed moment of time, everlasting and unchanging" — and Till names the operation as power: "In freezing time, architects would have it that they can control time. It is a control that attempts to banish those elements of time that present a challenge to the immutable authority of architecture" (Architecture Depends, p. 79). The antecedent relocates the debate from the building and its document (Weinthal's drawn time) to the image regime and the narrative form that administer stasis: the single before-and-after ("endemic in design theory") and its "critically naïve offshoot, design thinking." The dynamic counter-form is historiographic rather than technological: "a plurality of befores and afters" — one room's sixteen-year sequence of ephemeral installations (ephemeral-interior) read through its installation photographs (time-travel), where "the boundaries between past, present, and future become blurred." Where Position B's antecedents dynamize systems, events, gradients, or relations, Massey's dynamizes history itself: the static pole is what a discipline sees when it admits only one moment per interior, and the dynamic pole is what the same room looks like across all of them. The antecedent also supplies the debate's quietest critique of itself: every installation photograph in the case is "a fleeting moment frozen in time" — the dynamic pole's evidence is itself a plurality of statics. Museal antecedent (the preserved interior as the static pole's institution): the static pole has a built-institutional form, named by Marian Macken's chapter (2018): the preserved studio-museum, where "the passage of time is halted and change is excluded" and the interior is "a snapshot of inhabitation, no longer undergoing change, yet continuously present." The antecedent completes Position A's genealogy on the room scale: where the monument transcends death by claiming eternity and the drawing by freezing documentation, the studio-museum halts time by preservation — the working studio (a dynamic space "between the act of making and the made") converted, by the artist's death, into a room where dynamism survives only as residue ("a vessel of a former creative dynamism"; "observable but not occupiable"). The antecedent also supplies the debate's subtlest reversal: the preserved interior is not inert but distending — the visitor's two presents, Husserl's "thickened present," an "ever-ongoing present" — so the static pole here is not motionlessness but a present that will not move forward, its future severed ("no future paintings with Whiteley's signature produced within the space"). Stasis as halted becoming, not as fixed matter: the museum form the dynamic pole's critiques of freezing (Till's "control") must now confront institutionally. Digital antecedent (the static pole's most dynamic costume): the static pole has a computational form that claims dynamism, named by Johan Voordouw's chapter (2018): the topological surface, whose "continual smoothness," blobs, and undulating folds make it the very image of the dynamic pole — yet "In its present construction, for all the dynamism of topological surfaces, it remains as staid and static as the Dom-ino system of Le Corbusier. While it facilitates passive meandering, it stifles modification. While it is variable, it remains immobile." The antecedent completes the deflation genealogy on the computational side: where Glanville (C) deflates the sensor's dynamism (tricks serving stability) and Croft (D) the reconfiguration's (control, not freedom), Voordouw deflates the form's — continuous variation in the model producing an equally fixed condition in space ("Space is now a result of form, not a means to form"). The antecedent also supplies the debate's missing measure: not whether the building changes (it does, parametrically) but whether the inhabitant can change it ("It remains an open question how one might both enjoy and modify") — Lefebvre's modify-test as the dynamic pole's real criterion, and the finding that variability without modifiability is stasis by another name. Position B: The Responsive Environment — architecture as real-time system
The dynamic position: architecture is "a complex adaptive robotic system of interacting installations," whose sensor-actuator systems collect data and respond to "patterns of use within a real-time scenario." The responsive environment "has an immanent relationship to lived space," and under it "the relationship between interior architecture and interiority is dynamic and mobile, and ultimately aided by the inhabitant's response to the interior environment – and vice versa." Its temporal signature is unpredictability — "no single reading is possible" — and its social promise, via Lefebvre, is that the dynamic interior "enables individuals and groups to sustain shared concepts of changes in meanings and values," "open[ing] space for the transitory and transformative to resist traditional paradigms and ideologies." Bouman's version is the limit case: "people, rather than place, become the interface," with "wireless embedded technologies that 'reach you directly.'" See interactive-architecture.

Digital-spatial form (heterogeneous space): the dynamic position also has a spatial-order form: Hight, Hensel, and Menges's heterogeneous space, "ordered through differential relationships between diverse systems leading to a multiplicity of atmospheres" — "not neutral but active." Carraher's formulation of its dynamic claim: digital practice values "active space, which does not hide itself but proudly displays its dynamism. It draws attention to its conditions of production and impresses its spatial agency on our consciousness" — and its social claim is the reciprocal equality of "the human agent and the spatial agent." Where Position B's Taylor-version dynamizes the building (sensors, actuators, data), the heterogeneous-space version dynamizes space itself — the spatial order, not the appliance. See spatial-agency.
Historical antecedent: the dynamic position has a pre-electronic domestic ancestor in the Beechers' movable screen (1869): "By shifting this rolling screen from one part of the room to another, two apartments are always available, of any desired size within the limits of the large room" — engineered so that "a child can move the whole easily" (p. 46). Space reconfigured in use, no single fixed reading, the occupant as the actuator: responsiveness without sensors, feedback without data. Industrial antecedent: the dynamic position also has a factory-made ancestor in the prefabricated interior. Lustron's built-in cabinets, dressers, and closets were "manufactured as complete units and plugged into the house at the building site" (Schneiderman, quoting Wolfe and Leonard); su11's add-ons are "designed to be interchangeable, providing the ability to reconfigure elements over time as necessary and/or desired"; and Furniture House 2's structural furniture carries its own floors — the house reconfigured not by the hand at a screen but by the crane and the module swap. Here reconfiguration is manufactured into the element rather than sensed from the occupant: the house's response time is measured in building seasons, not milliseconds, and its "dynamism" is an economy (interchangeable parts outliving configurations) as much as an experience. The antecedent sharpens the antecedent's scale question from hand to factory: is plug-in dynamism dynamic architecture, dynamic product, or a third thing — the building as reconfigurable inventory? Sensory antecedent (experience-level dynamism): the dynamic thesis also has a non-technological, experiential form in Jim Drobnick's museum argument: "For exhibits to go beyond the visual presentation of objects, and engage with the other senses, is to venture into the dynamic realm of becoming rather than the static domain of being" (2002/2006, p. 94). Here the dynamic pole is not the actuated building but the engaged visitor: multi-sensory exhibits produce an experience that is "interrogative, temporal, pluralistic," while the static pole has an institutional form — the "anosmic condition of the conventional museum," the white cube's "pollution-free pristine state… relegates architecture to a purely visual state," a stability of stasis rather than of stone. The antecedent relocates the debate's time-axis from technology to the body: dynamism as a property of experience (becoming vs being) rather than of mechanisms (sensors, screens, modules) — and it poses the debate's implicit ontological question in Pater's vocabulary, where "volatile effects" were what architecture's static form could never contain. Generative antecedent (surface-registration dynamism): the earliest Intimus-canonized version of Position B is Winka Dubbeldam's "Thing-Shapes" (2002) — dynamism as generation rather than actuation. Architecture must become generative in the network economy: "the generation of a spatial construct not as a static device but as a set of inventions; not as literally moving objects but as surface registrations of force fields, smart systems and programmatic mappings" (p. 97). The antecedent's distinctive move is temporal and methodological at once: via Deleuze's Bergsonism (the right problems, real time) and Husserl's Origin of Geometry (free variation, phoronomic shapes), Dubbeldam dates the dynamic condition to "a collapse of the generative past and of the to-be-generated future" (p. 97) — the static pole's "static perception of history" replaced by a present that poses probabilities. And its built form is the smart layer, not the sensor array: the helmet's intelligent foam "constantly providing and adjusting," the salon's wrapper whose creases open "local insertions" — "architecture becomes a materially responsive expression" (pp. 98–99). Where Taylor's Position B dynamizes the system (sensors, data, feedback) and Drobnick's the experience, Dubbeldam dynamizes the surface: see thing-shapes, crease.
Computational antecedent (design-time dynamism): the most recent version of Position B is Jonathon R. Anderson & Laura Lovell-Anderson's "Transforming Interior Volumes" (2018) — dynamism as computed form-generation at the interior scale. "Agent-based visual scripting and computation is used as a medium for experimentation, decision-making, and problem solving to formulate dynamic surfaces and topographies"; the interior volume is transformed by "aggregates or modular component-based systems to manipulate volume, surface, and mass," assembled by tiling "in the mathematical logic of self-organization," with the Gyroid (the-gyroid) as the case. The antecedent's distinctive claim is that the dynamism lives in the design process, not in the building's behavior: the "dynamic surfaces" are frozen into fabrication ("The output can be translated through analog and digital means, with an array of modeling or physical prototyping realities") and never respond to anything again. It is Position B's genealogy taken to its limit case — and its implicit challenge to the whole debate: if dynamism can be computed into form, the responsive environment's sensors and actuators are one strategy among several for making "dynamic" architecture, and perhaps not even the decisive one. Performative antecedent (dynamism as exuberance): Laura Garófalo-Khan's "Sensorial interior landscapes" (2018) supplies Position B's historical-typological ancestor and its affective definition. The grotto — the type modernism rejected along with ornament — is already dynamic without any machinery: "Not so much a lived-in building as a living building," its Renaissance water plays "engag[ing] visitors in a daily ritual of play," its English surfaces that "pulsated, shimmered, and flowed." The contemporary version: "Their tactile, deep surfaces form part of a performative system that, like the grotto itself, is defined by dynamism and exuberance conscripted to create delight" — Hylozoic Soil's sensor-driven "delicate dance, like the Italian fountain grottoes with their orchestrated sprays and splashes," Bloomer's ornament with its "spectacle of changefulness." Where Taylor's Position B dynamizes the system and Drobnick's the experience, Garófalo-Khan dynamizes the event: the building's dynamism is not its stability's opposite but its performance — "an event space, not a place of quotidian habitation," whose changes are staged rather than data-driven. The antecedent poses the debate's purpose question: if dynamism is "conscripted to create delight," the dynamic pole has an affective telos (wonder, exuberance) the efficiency-driven sensor paradigm never names — and Glanville's critique (tricks serving stability) may miss the point entirely, because the grotto's tricks serve play. Campfire antecedent (dynamism as gradient and variability): the oldest ancestor of Position B comes from Banham himself, via Nataly Gattegno and Jason Kelly Johnson's reconstruction: the campfire — the shelter type that "interfer[es] with the local meteorology" rather than avoiding it — has "unique qualities which architecture cannot hope to equal, above all, its freedom and variability." Banham's Standard of Living Package mechanizes this dynamism: "a sentient structure, one able to sense its surroundings and provide multiple gradients of space surrounding it" — an "atmosphere maker" realizing "the dream of the un-house," dissolving "the typical envelope between interior and exterior entirely, allowing space to become a nomadic and transient living system." The contemporary descendant is Lightswarm — "an interactive light installation in a state of perpetual flux" — whose "artificially intelligent facade" can "sense, compute, respond, and interact," and whose passersby "can simply clap their hands to trigger a swarm of light to play around them for a while, circumnavigating the system and giving them the ability to take over." Where Taylor's Position B dynamizes the system and Garófalo-Khan's the event, the campfire antecedent dynamizes the gradient: change not as data response or staged exuberance but as degrees of interiority radiating from an energy source — dynamism as continuous variation in space rather than reaction in time. The antecedent also supplies the debate's strongest anti-static weapon: the campfire's "freedom and variability" are qualities "architecture cannot hope to equal" — the dynamic pole defined negatively against architecture itself (the "anti-architectural" "un-house"). Phenomenological-pedagogical antecedent (experiential becoming): the dynamic thesis also has an existential-register form in Ross T. Smith's chapter: the becoming pole located not in the building, the visitor, or the system but in being itself. "We exist, as do all substantive things, in a time-based condition of becoming, transformation, and dissolution. Our human condition, therefore, is a reflection of the natural and constructed world – one of constant change and impermanence." Where Drobnick's dynamism is the visitor's experiential becoming, Smith's is the ontological ground on which all perception stands — and the design consequence is a perception of change rather than a mechanism of it: students must be taught to perceive "the world and themselves in it, as object, material, atmosphere, and states of transition and ephemerality." The antecedent supplies the debate its philosophical floor: if impermanence is the human condition, the static pole's monument is not merely a style but an aspiration against the grain of existence — and the dynamic pole's deepest version needs no sensors at all, only trained attention. It also poses the debate's quietest question: whether architecture's temporality should answer the occupant's becoming (Smith's reverie and ephemerality) or defend against it (the monument's durability) — see subtle-revelation, temporality.
Structural antecedent (stability without stasis): Clare Olsen's "On technological limits" (2018) supplies Position B's structural-morphology version: dynamism as equilibrium that reads as suspended motion. The case is Heather Roberge's En Pointe (SCI-Arc Gallery) — the "co-dependent column system" whose folded, base-diminishing members stand only as a cluster, gravity-loaded in digital physics simulations until "the team arrived at the assembly, which is the thinnest it can possibly be, which is stable without appearing static." The formulation is the debate's bridge term: neither the static pole's stability (the monument's permanence) nor the dynamic pole's real-time change (sensors, data), but a third temporal condition — structure holding at its limit, legible as arrested motion. Its companion case, Iwamoto Scott's Voussoir Cloud, form-finds vaults "in pure compression" that are "perceived as continuous, yet differentiated, stable, and also incredibly light," and Wiscombe's Cantilever counterbalances "a sense of weight with its scale… by both its translucency and impossibly long cantilever." The antecedent also gives the debate its risk-economy explanation for why this dynamism lives in interiors: "installation projects can provide low-risk opportunities to expand the limits of structural performance" — the installation as the institutionally sanctioned site where architecture's aversion to "profound risk" is suspended. Where Taylor's Position B dynamizes the system and Smith's the condition of being, Olsen's cases dynamize the structure: see form-finding, column-cluster, technological-limits.
Alloplastic antecedent (self–environment malleability): the deepest version of Position B comes from the Hyposurface's own author, Mark Goulthorpe's "Notes on Digital Nesting" (2002/2006) — dynamism as a relation, not a property of buildings at all. Via Sandor Ferenczi's psychoanalytic pair, Goulthorpe distinguishes "a rigid and static relationship between the environment and the self, an autoplastic rigidity," from "a malleable and reciprocal alloplastic deformability" (note 8, p. 137) — the static/dynamic axis relocated from the building's behaviour to the self–environment relation. The relation's natural model is Bachelard's nest: "an intricate imprint of the inhabiting body, adjusted continually as a soft cocoon that outlines the aura of movement of the bird's rounded breast," which "raises the spectre of an environment adapting to our bodies and continually recalibrated to suit the vulnerability of our relation to the environment" (p. 135) — "an alloplastic relation between self and environment, moderated by an endlessly redefined digital matrix" (p. 135). Where Taylor's Position B dynamizes the system, Garófalo-Khan's the event, and Gattegno & Johnson's the gradient, Goulthorpe's dynamizes the relation itself: the environment is dynamic when it deforms mutually with the body — and the Aegis Hyposurface, the built descendant of this 1999–2002 theorization, is the relation's technological test case ("questioning the seeming solidity"). The antecedent also relocates the debate's normative centre: the point of dynamism is not efficiency, adaptation, or delight, but "the vulnerability of our relation to the environment" — see alloplastic-space, interactive-architecture, function-of-inhabiting.
Evental antecedent (dynamism as the event, avant la lettre and tardy): Dorita Hannah's chapter (2018) supplies the debate's deepest philosophical antecedent — Sanford Kwinter's evental, via which the static/dynamic pair is dated and re-founded. The modernist revolutions "shifted the static spatialization of time to a more dynamic temporalization of space through an emphasis on movement, relativity, and duration" (Kwinter, p. 13); Kwinter's "micro-architectures" and "macro-architectures" derive from practices "both private and political" (p. 14). Hannah's formulation is the debate's cleanest ontological statement: "Architecture, no longer recognized as a fixed, eternal entity, is rendered performative and realigns itself as active becoming rather than passive being." Where Position A's static pole is the monument and Position B's dynamic pole is usually the responsive system, the evental relocates dynamism to ontology: "The Deleuzian ontology of becoming thereby challenges the invariable presence of modern architecture that has continued to rely on an ontology of stasis." The antecedent's object-level concept is Deleuze's objectile (via Bernard Cache, adopted by Eisenman's "Unfolding Events" — "a temporal modulation that implies a continual variation of matter"): the object "no longer essentializing but active… a 'theater of matter'" that "overflows its boundaries so as to annihilate the frame." And the antecedent carries its own historiographic sting: Eisenman's embrace of the evental is "tardy" — "such a temporalization of space and form is not so new; it was played out by the historical and second-wave avant-garde who focused on the dynamic event, rather than the autonomous object" — so the debate's dynamic pole has an avant-garde prehistory older than its cybernetic and digital instantiations, and "the objectile, as active agent, is not dependent on digital media." Where Taylor's Position B dynamizes the system, Goulthorpe's the relation, and the grotto antecedent the event-as-programme, the evental antecedent dynamizes being itself: see objectile, event-space, temporality, spacing.
Sociological antecedent (the dwelling's double temporal order): the dynamic thesis also has a non-technological, sociological form in Roderick J. Lawrence's chapter (1987/2006), whose editors' headnote states the pair in domestic-space terms: "while houses and their internal activities are ordered by long-standing habits in building and living patterns, they remain responsive to social influences in ways that have the potential to remake and reform them outside of a static framework of living standards" (p. 184) — and the constructive corollary: "house and housing designs that are attuned to the dynamic processes that occur within them may be produced" within "ecological reflection." The antecedent relocates the debate's axis from mechanism, event, or relation to social time: the static pole is not the monument (A) but the static standard — the fixed living standard (the modernist kitchen/dining room given "aesthetic resolution" but not adaptation "to demographic shifts in family constitution and population") — and the dynamic pole is not the sensor system (B) but the dwelling's social responsiveness — the capacity of house-plans to be remade as households change. Where Position D's social deflation (Croft) shows reconfiguration disciplining its occupants, this antecedent shows the opposite pressure: households outgrowing the standard plan, demanding the remaking. It also supplies the debate its slowest clock: change measured in family constitutions and populations, not milliseconds — the dwelling as the temporality between the monument's permanence and the responsive system's real time. Position C: The Cybernetic Deflation — "clever tricks," not intelligence
The sceptical middle position, from cyberneticist Ranulph Glanville: almost everything marketed as "intelligent" or "interactive" architecture is stimulus-response machinery. The thermostat's sensor-switch seemed intelligent only "when such 'behavior seemed wondrous'"; the smart fridge "is closer to a servicing device" than an interactive device; and — the crucial twist — the "clever tricks that allow them to react" are "often… designed to retain a static stability." On this reading, the dynamic paradigm's systems do not overturn architecture's stability but serve it: reactivity in the service of regulation. Position D: The Social Deflation — "control, not freedom"
The social-pragmatics deflation, from Catherine Croft's reading of the Schröder House (1924): the first great dynamic interior was a regime. The Modern Movement promised that "once the plan was free and open, space could be demarked, reformed and reconfigured with the aid of kinetic architectural elements or mobile furniture units" — but "by rejecting any clearly defined hierarchical space, the Schröder House becomes not more egalitarian but more dictatorial"; "the reality is about control, not freedom. It could even be said to resemble life in prison, with its proscribed actions at proscribed times." The partitions "do not make sense unless all are closed or all open," so "there is thus no scope for different time schedules" — dynamism without per-occupant discretion — and "ultimately, Schröder craved greater privacy." The position's historical depth: J.G. Wattjes raised the practicality doubt in 1925 itself — "will such extreme flexibility in fact prove convenient in the long run? I very much doubt it" — the ancestor of Glanville's critique, displaced from cybernetics to family life. Where C deflates dynamism technically (tricks serving stability), D deflates it socially (reconfiguration as discipline): the occupant's labour of transformation is the regime's maintenance cost, and what the dynamic promise dissolves is precisely privacy. Current State
The debate now has four positions and remains asymmetric: the static position is reconstructed only as the foil of the dynamic one, and no source in the wiki yet argues for monumental permanence in its own terms. Four questions hold it open. First, the empirical question — Glanville's deflation (C) suggests the built "dynamic" environment may be stability-machinery wearing the costume of dynamism, in which case A and B are closer than they appear (the thermostat regulates; so, arguably, does the sensor field that "scrutinizes, identifies, and directs" — cf. non-places). Second, the social question, opened by Croft (D): the first great dynamic interior was socially repressive — flexibility without per-occupant discretion ("all are closed or all open," "no scope for different time schedules"), transformation as the occupant's disciplinary labour, and a client who "ultimately… craved greater privacy." D asks whether any dynamic paradigm has yet solved the problem its first case failed: how reconfigurability accommodates simultaneous, unequal, conflicting inhabitants (a question Taylor's 2018 chapter does not address, and which Croft's teenager with "filthy underwear strewn across the floor" states unforgettably). Third, the temporal question: if the "data-driven environment… is inherently unpredictable, as its 'stability' is ever changing," the debate may really be about which time architecture serves — the monument's across-death time, the alteration tradition's generational time (temporality, adaptive-reuse), or the real-time scenario's perpetual present. Fourth, the communication question — Bouman's claim that architecture "will lose its position and character as a consistent and integrated form of cultural communication" predicts the debate's end-state, but the closing Lefebvrian claim (the dynamic interior sustaining "shared concepts of changes in meanings and values") claims a new communicative form for it. Campos's transient interiors add a datum to the third question: dynamism can be logistical rather than technological — the modular, occupant-reconfigured interior ("permanently nomadic plan," components that "move, aggregate, stack, and disperse") makes change an economic strategy for nomadic clients, dynamic furnishing again rather than dynamic building — though Croft's audit suggests the logistical version inherits the first case's social cost: mobility for the system, compression for the family.
Carraher's spatial-order deepening (homogeneous vs. heterogeneous space) recasts the four positions as two spatial politics: the static pole is not only the monument (A) but the neutral box — space whose agency is concealed ("standardization made architecture disappear by attempting to hide its effects and power") — and the dynamic pole is not only the responsive system (B) but heterogeneous space — space whose agency is displayed ("active space, which does not hide itself but proudly displays its dynamism"). The recasting adds a fifth question the other positions do not pose: which politics of agency serves inhabitants better — the concealed kind (modernist neutrality, which "may have allowed greater agency for inhabitants because of its neutrality") or the displayed kind (conspicuous dynamism, which "draws attention to its conditions of production")? The question remains open, but it relocates the debate from technology (sensors vs. stone) to the visibility of power in space (cf. power-and-space Position M). Drobnick's sensory antecedent adds a still different relocation: from the visibility of power to the temporality of experience — dynamism as "becoming" lived by the engaged body (against the anosmic stasis of the conventional museum), suggesting the debate's positions can be held simultaneously at three levels: the monument's material time, the responsive system's real time, and the visitor's experiential time. Dubbeldam's generative antecedent adds a fourth: the surface's generative time — "a collapse of the generative past and of the to-be-generated future" (p. 97) — in which the construct exists as "a set of inventions… surface registrations of force fields" rather than as either stable monument or real-time system. The four levels are not rivals: a building can hold monument-time in its mass, real-time in its sensors, generative time in its design method, and experiential time in its visitors — and the debate's unresolved question is which of these levels counts when we call a work of architecture dynamic.
Anderson & Lovell-Anderson's computational antecedent (2018) adds a fifth refinement to the generative level: dynamism authored into the form by computation — "Agent-based visual scripting and computation is used as a medium for experimentation, decision-making, and problem solving to formulate dynamic surfaces and topographies." Their surfaces are "dynamic" because agents, systems and self-organizing tiling produced them (design-time), not because anything moves in use (run-time): the dynamism is frozen at the moment of fabrication. This poses the debate's sharpest version of Glanville's deflation from inside Position B itself — if a "dynamic surface" need never respond to anything, the dynamic/static distinction splits along a new axis: not whether the building changes, but whether the change happened in the design process or in the dwelling. The generative-time level now divides into two: Dubbeldam's dynamism authored before fabrication and constantly adjusted in use, and Anderson & Lovell-Anderson's dynamism that exists only in the process that made the form.
Garófalo-Khan's performative antecedent (2018) adds a fifth level and a purpose: dynamism as staged exuberance — "a performative system that, like the grotto itself, is defined by dynamism and exuberance conscripted to create delight." The grotto lineage relocates the debate's temporal axis once more, from system time (Taylor), experience time (Drobnick), generative time (Dubbeldam) and design-time (Anderson & Lovell-Anderson) to event time: the building as "an event space, not a place of quotidian habitation," whose dynamism is a programme (water plays, changeful ornament, responsive dance) performed for occupants rather than run for data. The debate's open question gains a purpose axis — dynamism for what (stability [Glanville's suspicion], adaptation [Taylor], becoming [Drobnick], generation [Dubbeldam], computation [Anderson & Lovell-Anderson], delight [Garófalo-Khan]) — and with it the observation that the oldest dynamic architecture, the grotto, needed neither sensors nor computation, only water and light.
Gattegno & Johnson's campfire antecedent (2018) pushes the purpose axis one term older and adds a spatial mode: dynamism as gradient and variability — Banham's campfire, whose "freedom and variability" are qualities "architecture cannot hope to equal," mechanized into the Standard of Living Package ("a sentient structure" providing "multiple gradients of space") and recovered in Lightswarm's "perpetual flux." The purpose axis gains variability [Banham] — dynamism not for any end at all, but as the intrinsic quality of interference with the environment — and the debate gains its most radical anti-static formulation: the dynamic pole defined against architecture itself ("the dream of the un-house," the "anti-architectural" Package). The antecedent also completes the levels catalogue: monument-time (A), real-time (Taylor), experiential time (Drobnick), generative time (Dubbeldam), design-time (Anderson & Lovell-Anderson), event time (Garófalo-Khan), and now gradient time — continuous variation in degrees of interiority, the campfire's warmth and light as change without events. Smith's phenomenological-pedagogical antecedent (2018) adds a final, ontological level: becoming as the human condition itself ("a time-based condition of becoming, transformation, and dissolution… one of constant change and impermanence") — dynamism not as a property any building holds but as the temporality every perception already lives, teachable as attention ("states of transition and ephemerality"). The debate still holds four positions (A–D); the antecedents continue to multiply Position B's modes of being dynamic — and the standing question sharpens accordingly: if dynamism can be gradient, event, generation, computation, experience, system, and now the very structure of being, what work is the single static/dynamic axis still doing?
Olsen's structural antecedent (2018) adds a refinement that splits Position B's mechanism from its image: En Pointe's columns move nothing and sense nothing — yet they are "stable without appearing static," and the distinction between appearing and being is the antecedent's whole point. The installation stages dynamism as perceptual (thinness that reads as instability, weight counterbalanced by translucency) while its physical condition is equilibrium at the limit of structure — a dynamism of the eye housed in the static member. This gives the debate its cleanest synthesis with its own deflation: Glanville's "clever tricks… designed to retain a static stability" are here openly avowed — the structure is static stability, deliberately performed as stasis's opposite — suggesting that the debate's real axis may be not static/dynamic but legible/hidden temporality: whether the time a building holds (permanence, equilibrium, feedback) is displayed to perception or concealed behind it.
Goulthorpe's alloplastic antecedent (2002/2006) then relocates the axis one level deeper than any of the above: from the building's behaviour (system, event, gradient, structure) to the self–environment relation itself. Ferenczi's autoplastic/alloplastic pair — "a rigid and static relationship between the environment and the self" against "a malleable and reciprocal alloplastic deformability" — defines the static pole not as a kind of building but as a kind of relation (the self before a fixed environment), and the dynamic pole as mutual deformation recalibrated through "an endlessly redefined digital matrix." The relocation has three consequences. First, the levels catalogue gains its deepest entry: monument-time (A), real-time (Taylor), experiential time (Drobnick), generative time (Dubbeldam), design-time (Anderson & Lovell-Anderson), event time (Garófalo-Khan), gradient time (Banham via G&J), ontological becoming (Smith), perceptual legibility (Olsen) — and now relational time, the tempo at which body and environment recalibrate each other (the nest's "continually"). Second, the debate's normative centre shifts from performance to vulnerability: the alloplastic dynamic environment exists for "the vulnerability of our relation to the environment," a justification (care) none of the efficiency-, delight-, or becoming-framed antecedents supply — and one that reads Glanville's trick-critique differently, since a trick serving care is not a trick serving stability. Third, the built test case is internal to the debate: the Aegis Hyposurface — whose author wrote this antecedent — is the alloplastic relation's only full-scale realization, which turns the standing question ("do the Aegis and the Muscle pass Glanville's test?") into an empirical question about one building. The debate still holds four positions (A–D); the alloplastic antecedent suggests its deepest settlement would not be a verdict on sensors at all, but an account of what relation to the environment a static building could still make possible — the autoplastic rigidity that shelters being the very thing Bachelard's cell (whiteness guarding more than walls) already described.
Jacobus's media antecedent (2018) then adds the value-side of the static pole: the static artifact staying static while acquiring "dynamic" value as deliverable content. "Interactive surfaces are a direct and literal example of this phenomenon, wherein the wall as a static, physical artifact begins to deliver a deeper and more complex space than that of the physical interior itself. We've begun to expect more from the physical surfaces that surround us" — the energy floor whose "new value will arise from what they deliver virtually and intellectually," stone thinned to "an incredibly thin veneer," and the terminus "the immaterial as a new purveyor of reality." The antecedent gives Glanville's deflation a material twin: where the cybernetic critique suspects the dynamic building of serving "a static stability," Jacobus's static surfaces openly are stability — unmoving walls, floors, and veneers whose dynamism is entirely deliverable content (captured energy, readable graphics, culturally rooted symbols). The debate's levels catalogue gains its content-layer: monument-time (A), real-time (Taylor), experiential time (Drobnick), generative time (Dubbeldam), design-time (Anderson & Lovell-Anderson), event time (Garófalo-Khan), gradient time (Banham via G&J), ontological becoming (Smith), perceptual legibility (Olsen), relational time (Goulthorpe), drawn time (Weinthal) — and now delivered time: the static surface's dynamism located not in anything the artifact does but in what it delivers. The standing question sharpens once more: if the dynamic pole's newest form is a static wall delivering virtual depth, then the static/dynamic axis has passed from behavior to media — and the debate's endgame may be that "dynamic" architecture is simply what the third cultural register (see cultural-registers) expects of any surface, static or not.
Weinthal's representational antecedent (2018) then adds the axis beneath all the others: the static/dynamic distinction is administered by the disciplines' shared drawing system. Orthographic projection is "conducive to the static nature of architecture," while "interiors align with time-based activities but are typically absent in orthographic drawings" — the temporal is not merely excluded from the built artifact but erased at the level of documentation, where "orthographic drawings like it that way; it keeps the space clean and objective rather than muddy with the ephemeral shoes of people walking through it." The antecedent makes the debate's four positions depend on an unstated graphical settlement: Position A's monument is static twice over (in matter and in document), while the dynamic pole's evidence — Pavlova's stage-light, the space-shapes, the dark-technique tracings — exists only as research graphics outside "the professional construction document set." Weinthal's programme (movement rules "derived from the documentation of movement first") therefore proposes the debate's next battleground in advance: whether the static/dynamic question will be settled in buildings at all, or in the drawing conventions that decide what counts as buildable — a relocation that runs parallel to Olsen's legibility question (displayed vs. concealed temporality) one level deeper: not whether time is displayed, but whether it can be drawn at all.
Massey's historiographic antecedent (2018) then adds the axis beside Weinthal's: the static/dynamic distinction is also administered by the image and narrative conventions a discipline borrows for respectability. Where Weinthal's freeze lives in the working drawing, Massey's lives in the published interior — "a freshly constructed, shiny new entity, usually without inhabitants in a fixed moment of time, everlasting and unchanging" — and in the linear before-and-after narrative "endemic in design theory," with Till's charge that freezing time is an attempt at control ("a control that attempts to banish those elements of time that present a challenge to the immutable authority of architecture," p. 79). The antecedent's dynamic counter-form is historiographic, not technological: "a plurality of befores and afters" — the ICA's Dover Street gallery read across sixteen years of ephemeral installations, each documented by a photograph that is itself "a fleeting moment frozen in time."
