Definition
Interactive architecture names the paradigm in which buildings and interiors are not static enclosures but "a complex adaptive robotic system of interacting installations" (Taylor): environments equipped with sensors, actuators, and distributed intelligence that change in real time in response to occupants, data, and external events. Taylor's 2018 chapter gives the wiki its account. The paradigm's premise: mobile digital technologies, new materials, and controllable structures "emphasize[] the distance between inhabitable space as a fixed architecture and as a flow of information," so that the built environment "might reconfigure itself depending on the social dynamics that are occurring." Its contrast class is the "classical worldview of architecture as a static, built placemaking device" (Bouman) — and, at the limit, monumental architecture as "the signifier of the ability to transcend death" — against which "the responsive environment has an immanent relationship to lived space… collect[ing] data and respond[ing] to patterns of use within a real-time scenario," its "stability" ever changing. Under this paradigm "the relationship between interior architecture and interiority is dynamic and mobile, and ultimately aided by the inhabitant's response to the interior environment – and vice versa."
The chapter's built exemplars: dECOi's Aegis Hyposurface (Mark Goulthorpe) — "the world's first responsive architectural surface," an array of sensors (video cameras, microphones) driving a network of pistons that physically deforms a metal face outside the Birmingham Hippodrome, bringing "Aegis into a conversation with whoever triggered a response"; Mark Burry found its undulation seasick-making — "spatially disturbing, while questioning the seeming solidity of the Aegis Hyposurface's metal surface." Kengo Kuma's T-Room (2005) — an air-filled translucent membrane "animated by variations in air pressure," operating not on stimulus/response but on a movement cycle that "forced a more intimate relationship between bodies, as well as between body and architecture." NOX's Freshwater Pavilion — altering "a virtual real-time model in relation to movement of people within the space." ONL's Digital Pavilion Korea (2006) — a Voronoi cell structure "controlled and kinetically manipulated using actuators in the beams of the structural system"; ONL's Muscle (2003) — infrared motion and proximity sensors "detect people's movements in the surrounding area prompting the Muscle to react slightly, while touch sensors induce a stronger reaction."
The paradigm's internal critique comes from cyberneticist Ranulph Glanville: the oldest building "intelligence" is thermostatic heating, whose sensor-switch behaviour "seemed wondrous" only once; such systems "perform tricks," offering nothing "remotely interactive" — stimulus-response rather than interaction; even the smart fridge "is not truly interactive and is probably closer to a servicing device." His verdict: "the buildings and devices we currently have are nowhere near interactive, let alone intelligent. They are merely built to include clever tricks that allow them to react, often in ways designed to retain a static stability" (2001, p. 17). Taylor reports the countervailing trend — interactive technologies "principally operating through the Web of Things, connect activation with performance," with "reciprocal relationships between data input (stimulus) and surface change (response)" — but Glanville's criterion remains the debate's gauge.
Adjacent strands assembled by the chapter: Michael Weinstock's argument that "housescapes will require distributed intelligence and active material systems" able to change "internal parameters and performances in relation to the life of their inhabitants and events in the external world" — with the corollary that "the home has become a terrain vague, lying somewhere between the digital and physical worlds" (see terrain-vague); Ole Bouman's proposal that "people, rather than place, become the interface with the ultimate aim of 'merging digital and physical environments in a single interface,'" so that where "human behavior is no longer framed by place," architecture "will lose its position and character as a consistent and integrated form of cultural communication"; Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby's design research into "the poetic and sensual rather than the technical or utilitarian" uses of pervasive computing — "a more intangible or ephemeral interface design that makes visible the invisible or evokes immaterial sensuality"; and wearable technologies that relocate the interface to the body, interaction occurring "through tactile and direct contact with the instruments located on the body" (Croci).

Open Questions
- Glanville's criterion vs the chapter's programme: do the Aegis Hyposurface and the Muscle pass Glanville's test of interactivity, or are they "clever tricks… designed to retain a static stability" at higher amplitude? Where is the line between stimulus-response and conversation?
- Is the responsive surface an interior architecture at all — the discipline's definitions (Kurtich's shell/completion/reuse; Brooker & Stone's alteration; Caan's psychological intent) all presuppose built form as the design's medium, which Taylor's animate interior explicitly does "not [take] as… the precursor to design intervention."
- Who authors the responsive interior: the designer of the surface, the programmer of the sensor logic, the corporation running the "efficiency diagram," or the inhabitant whose data trains the system? (Cf. the wiki's Authorship question for alteration.)
- Weinstock's home "between the digital and physical worlds": is the distributed, responsive house still a domestic interior — or does "the decreasing experience of personal space" mean the interior has become infrastructure?
