Definition
The building genotype is Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson's account of what a building type is beneath its visible form: "each characteristic pattern that we would call a building type typically takes these fundamental relations and, by varying the syntactic parameters and the interface between them, bends the fundamental model in one direction or another, depending on the nature of the categories and relations to be constructed by the ordering of space." Every building, on their abstract definition, is "a certain ordering of categories, to which is added a certain system of controls, the two conjointly constructing an interface between the inhabitants of the social knowledge embedded in the categories and the visitors whose relations with them are controlled by the building" — a structure common to all buildings "of whatever kind." The genotype is the underlying generative pattern of these relations (knowledge and control, inhabitant and visitor interface, permeability structure) that a type bends rather than invents. The word is biological by design: as a genotype underlies a phenotype, the genotype is the pattern that survives variation of form — the reason a house, a hospital, a school and a prison are recognisable types though each "bends" the same fundamental model differently. The type is thus, in the wiki's typology vocabulary, not a repeated façade or plan figure but a configuration of syntactic parameters: relative asymmetry (the relations of the categories) and ringiness/distributedness (the relations of control).
The concept differs from the classical notion of type (Colquhoun's symbolic vehicle, Rossi's "idea of architecture closest to its essence") in being relational and social rather than formal and symbolic: what persists across the type's instances is not a figure but a pattern of categories, controls and encounters. - Is the genotype the same unit as Colquhoun's or Rossi's type under another description, or a rival reduction: does the genotype explain the type's persistence (configuration reproducing social structure) where the type-as-figure cannot — or does it dissolve the symbol-bearing content typology was invented to keep?
- The chapter bends the model across "houses, hospitals, schools and prisons" analytically, but the excerpt names no worked example (the unexcerpted apparatus applies gamma-analysis to real plans). What are the canonical genotypes of the wiki's interior types — and does the waiting room (suspension without control) or the museum (visitors instructed but uncontrolled) fit the abstract interface directly?
- If a genotype is a pattern of permeability, what is the genotype of the transformed building — adaptive reuse re-bends the fundamental model for new inhabitants without new form (adaptive-reuse). Does reuse change the genotype or only the surface?
