Bill Hillier (1937–2019) was a British architect and urban theorist who spent most of his career at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, where he founded and developed the space syntax research programme — "an original research programme that set the study of architecture on a firm scientific basis." He died in London on 5 November 2019, aged 82. Julienne Hanson is an architect-anthropologist of the Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning, University College London, Hillier's long-term collaborator and co-developer of space syntax. Together they wrote the landmark "Space Syntax" paper (1976) and The Social Logic of Space (Cambridge University Press, 1984), the theory that spatial configuration — the pattern of relations between spaces, not the spaces themselves — is a social product and a social force: buildings and settlements generate and modulate the encounters of which societies are made. Hillier later developed the programme in Space is the Machine (1996); Hillier and Hanson co-authored Decoding Homes and Houses (1998). The Intimus editors introduce Hillier as "best known for his research on 'spatial syntax'" and pair him with "academic Julienne Hanson" for the anthology's spatial-analytic selection.
