Definition

Sentient spaces name the terminus of the trajectory Nataly Gattegno and Jason Kelly Johnson map "from ambient environments to sentient spaces": environments whose "gradients of environment begin gaining intelligence through their seamless integration with data – they become sentient." The chapter's definition is unusually strong: "Sentience suggests an inherent ability of an object to perceive, sense, and feel its surrounding environment in a subjective and highly personal manner." Sentience is thus not a synonym for smart (sensing plus actuation) — it claims subjectivity: the space does not merely detect inputs but feels its surroundings "in a subjective and highly personal manner," and its outputs (light cascades, whispers, data streams) are presented as the space's own moods and expressions. As daily life "is inundated with information and data, this quality of sentience takes on a new role in the design of the spaces we inhabit": new modes of space "are emerging that are immersed – sentient – in the data that we generate; surfaces that are streaming with text and color or screens that are transmitting real-time information."

The chapter's closing proposal sharpens the concept against the screen: "We readily expect every surface to be smart, to be data-rich and brimming with information" — but "rather than continuing to flatten, minimize, and strip the representation of information, what if it became robust, thick, deep, and part of the everyday spaces we interact with?" The territory emerging is one "where these qualities of ambience and sentience are becoming hybridized and spatial," with "rooms, buildings, and cities" as the scale-range of the sentient.   • Does "sentience" name a real property of sensing surfaces or a rhetorical anthropomorphization — and does Ranulph Glanville's stimulus-response critique (the thermostat, the smart fridge, "clever tricks… designed to retain a static stability") apply to Lightswarm's swarm algorithm and Murmur Wall's harvest-and-retransmit loop?
  • The definition's crux is subjectivity: can an object feel "in a subjective and highly personal manner," or is the subjectivity borrowed from the occupants whose data and behaviour the space senses — in which case the sentient space is a mirror, and its "personal manner" is our own aggregated profile reflected back?
