Definition
Alloplastic names a malleable and reciprocal relation between self and environment, against its psychoanalytic counterpart autoplastic, the "rigid and static relationship between the environment and the self." The distinction is Sandor Ferenczi's, developed at architectural length in Mark Goulthorpe's "From Autoplastic to Alloplastic Space" (dECOi Aegis Hyposurface, Hypersurface Architecture II, Architectural Design 69.9–10, 1999, pp. 60–5). Goulthorpe's 2002 Intimus essay gives the canonical statement of the pair: "The terms articulate the difference between a rigid and static relationship between the environment and the self, an autoplastic rigidity, and a malleable and reciprocal alloplastic deformability" (note 8, p. 137).
The concept's design deployment comes through Bachelard's nest: "an intricate imprint of the inhabiting body, adjusted continually as a soft cocoon that outlines the aura of movement of the bird's rounded breast" — which "raises the spectre of an environment adapting to our bodies and continually recalibrated to suit the vulnerability of our relation to the environment" (p. 135). The nest's "dry modelling, merging camouflage and comfort in a density of ambient 'stuff,'" "seem[s] suggestive of an alloplastic relation between self and environment, moderated by an endlessly redefined digital matrix" (p. 135). Three elements define the concept: malleability (the environment deforms rather than the self adapting to fixed form), reciprocity (body and environment recalibrate each other), and the digital matrix as moderator (the "endlessly redefined" computational medium through which the deformation is computed — in Goulthorpe's own practice, the Aegis Hyposurface's pistoned surface, "the world's first responsive architectural surface").
The concept supplies the wiki's static vs. dynamic architecture debate with its self–environment formulation: the dynamic pole is not merely a building that changes but a relation that deforms mutually — alloplastic — while the static pole's deepest form is not the monument but the autoplastic rigidity of the self before a fixed environment. And it supplies the interactive architecture cluster its psychoanalytic warrant: the responsive surface exists to convert autoplastic rigidity into alloplastic reciprocity.
