Space-Time Continuum

Definition

The space-time continuum names the modern concept — born in painting — that reality is perceived not as the static moment fixed by perspectival construction but as extended in time: "Since perspectival construction reduces time to a static moment, it followed that classical painting was predicated on a drawing convention that presents a false picture of reality." In Deyong's account, its originator is Cézanne, who "painted not what the eye sees in a kind of optical illusion, but what the mind-body complex perceives in time," registering temporal "distortions" (a tabletop stretched downwards, a wall bent sideways) that depict reality "not as it is experienced in a static moment but in the duration of days, weeks, and months." Merleau-Ponty reads these distortions as the artist's desire to depict "reality in the process of becoming… an object in the act of appearing, organizing itself before our eyes."

The concept then travels from painting into architecture through a documented chain: Cézanne → Cubism → avant-garde movements "from Suprematism to De Stijl." De Stijl "str[ove] to eliminate all traces of naturalistic representation, reducing the elements of painting to the minimum abstract essentials: three primary colors (blue, red, and yellow), and horizontal and vertical lines" — a distillation that, as Yves-Alain Bois observed, "did not come readily, but was determined after much struggle and debate." In architecture, van Doesburg's Counter Constructions (with van Eesteren, 1923), drawn in axonometric — "a drawing convention that shows the plan and section simultaneously" — suspended horizontal and vertical planes in space; the idea "may also have been the source of Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion (1929)," a counter composition whose effect is temporal: "As a composition, Mies's design is dynamic, changing in time as the visitor zigzags through an enfilade of open spaces." At the Bauhaus, Moholy-Nagy "proposed a new space-time vision," which his student Gyorgy Kepes defined as transparency: "a simultaneous perception of different spatial locations. Space not only recedes but fluctuates in continuous activity" (Language of Vision, 1944, p. 77). Rowe and Slutzky's resurrection of the term in the 1950s produced phenomenal transparency — the concept's enduring architectural elaboration (see counter-construction).

Open Questions

  • Is the axonometric (plan and section shown "simultaneously") the space-time concept's drawing — and if so, does contemporary parametric/digital representation continue or exhaust it?
  • The chapter moves the concept from pictorial duration (Cézanne's months) to peripatetic duration (Mies's zigzagging visitor) — is architectural space-time always pedestrian, and how does it scale to vehicular or mediated movement (see movement-perception)?
  • Kepes's transparency is perceptual ("equivocal meaning"); UN Studio's blob-to-box is computational. When the space-time continuum is calculated rather than perceived, does the concept survive?
